The Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics is a central scientific institution of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (University of Bonn).
The strategic goals of the institute are:
- Cutting-edge research in algorithmic discrete mathematics, with a focus on combinatorial optimization
- Joining theory and practice at the highest level
- Support of equal opportunity and early-career researchers
The institute was founded in 1987 by Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Bernhard Korte. The director is Professor Dr. Jens Vygen. The organization of the institute is regulated by a statute.
The members of the institute perform their academic duties in the Fachgruppe (Section) of Mathematics of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences; the professors are also secondary members of the Fachgruppe (Section) Computer Science and members of the TRA Modelling.
The Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics is one of the responsible bodies of the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (Cluster of Excellence), acting in particular in the research area "Combinatorial optimization, complexity, and applications".
The Research Institute is spatially and organizationally closely related to the Arithmeum. The entire building is accessible without stairs (by elevator).
